Illinois Soil Nitrogen Test

Request the Test

Here you can find out more information about how to request an ISNT.

How the ISNT is being used:

  • Practical Approaches
  • Fertililizer quantification
  • Turf Grass
  • Other crops
  • Different Aspects

Sampling depth for the ISNT UPDATED!

The ISNT was developed using soil samples collected to 1 foot, and this remains the minimum depth for sampling.  For deep soils in the Corn Belt, samples should also be collected from a depth of 12-24 inches, because fertilizer N need can be increased by low subsoil fertility.  The common practice of sampling to 6 or 7 inches for pH, P, or K is not adequate for the ISNT.

Participating Laboratories

There are several labs in the U.S. which currently run the amino sugar N test as part of their soil analysis services. By listing these labs we offer no endorsement of the labs. If you have questions about where to get your samples analyzed, please contact us for advice.
